  1. Where do the collections come from?

The Genocide Archive of Rwanda materials have been collected from the field by our archive team or donated by survivors and partner organisations.

  1. Where are the collections stored?

The collections are stored at the Kigali Genocide Memorial. Some items are on display in the memorial exhibitions while the rest are housed in the physical archive.

  1. Where is the Kigali Genocide Memorial located?

The Kigali Genocide Memorial is located in Gisozi, a sector of Kigali in Rwanda and ten minutes from the centre of town.

  1. How can I access the physical archive?

To access the physical archive, please visit the Contact us page and complete the ‘Make an inquiry’ form.

  1. Can I view all the collections for free?

Most of our collections are free to access while others depend on their assigned levels of access. This is usually based on the request made by the person who donated the item.

  1. How do I use the interactive maps?

The interactive maps are easy to use. Simply click on the indicators on the map. This will bring up a window which you can use to learn more about the topic being mapped.

  1. How do I search for a particular document/item?

You can search through our collections by using our search option that is provided on all pages.

  1. How do I register for updates?

You can register for updates by clicking here. You can also stay up to date with our work by following us on social media via the links at the bottom of the page.

  1. Can I download a particular item?

Some photos, videos and documents in our archive are available for download. Please contact us to check the copyright and usage permissions for the item you wish to download. You can also consult our Access Policy.

  1. How do I volunteer with the archive?

We welcome people from around the world to the archive as volunteers. Learn more about our volunteering and internship programs here.

  1. How do I conduct research with the archive?

The Genocide Archive of Rwanda works with researchers and scholars from around the world who are completing genocide studies research projects. Our Research Affiliates work closely with the archive to organise their field research, examine archival materials and provide strategic input into the development and priorities of the archive.
