To mark the twentieth commemoration of the Genocide against the Tutsi, Aegis Trust and its partners have expanded the Kigali Genocide Memorial. The memorial now includes the Global Centre for Humanity, an international institute that inspires and supports those standing up for humanity around the world. The centre collects witness testimony, documents mass atrocities and conducts research on mass atrocity prevention. It also works with peace builders so their communities can be more resilient to the divisions that can lead to mass atrocities.

The Global Centre for Humanity builds on the work being done by Aegis Trust, including the Genocide Archive of Rwanda and peace education programmes in Rwanda that promote reconciliation and unity and have already reached over 10,000 school students. The centre will include a community-wide archive and documentation repository to inform and promote evidence based policy that strengthens genocide prevention and peace education approaches. It will also host educational seminar and workshop on the genocide and preventing mass atrocities.

The evidence based policy developed at the centre will draw on local and international experts and will deliver meaningful and sustainable results that benefit the people of Rwanda. Rwanda’s history is marked by insecurity, violence and loss, from which the nation has not yet fully recovered. Therefore, it is important that 20 years after the genocide, Rwandans, the international community, non-governmental organisations, donor governments and research institutions, do everything possible to help build lasting peace and prevent a repeat of the genocide, in Rwanda or anywhere else.

The expansion of the Kigali Genocide Memorial is part of the Aegis Peace, Reconciliation and Economic Development Programme. Those partnering in the project include:
