Location: Eastern Province (Gahengeri Village, Karambi Cell, Muhazi Sector, Rwamagana District)

The group started with the objective to prevent and manage community conflicts, and they operate in the place where Jean Kambanda, the interim prime minister during the genocide, was born.

The Association

In 2007, the authorities of Mukura Sector had the idea to bring together some of their residents who were experiencing problems as a result of the genocide. After receiving training in conflict prevention and management and income generation from the organization La Benevolencija, participants decided to form a group called Abunzubumwe. They started to visit one another and help each other and to train people in their community on unity and reconciliation.

Activities and Achievements

  • To visit and help members of group (for instance helping care for those who are sick)
  • To help reconcile genocide survivors and perpetrators, particularly in terms of compensation
  • To help find the remains of genocide victims in order to help them rest in peace in dignity
  • To participate in development activities together, such as farming cassava, potatoes, maize, etc.
  • They distributed ameliorated seeds of cassava to the group members, so that after harvesting, everyone got food and made money from selling the surplus cassava
  • In 2009, La Benevolencija gave 21 goats to the group so that every member got one goat
Moving forward, Abunzubumwe plans to continue with their existing activities and to organize an income-generating project with funding from La Benevolencija.
Abunzubumwe association is composed of 20 members, including genocide survivors, the families of genocide perpetrators, people disadvantaged by history and bad leadership, as well as reformed community troublemakers (i.e. people who used to be thieves, etc.)
